Fly low over spectacular Lake Eyre, visit the Burke & Wills Dig Tree on the banks of the Cooper, walk along the shores of Lake Eyre with an aboriginal elder and stay at the Prairie Hotel in Parachilna - this trip has it all.
"We had a wonderful time. Diverse, interesting, off the 'beaten track' and well organised. The hospitality was warm and friendly. Diana was fantastic! Will come again."
Day 1 Dig Tree/Innamincka This morning board Air Adventure’s Outback Jet and experience first hand the convenience of travelling by private aircraft – you will be in the outback for morning tea! Your pilot will land you alongside the tree made famous by the tragedy of the Burke & Wills expedition. Wander around the very site of Camp 65 where the chain of events came to a climax resulting in the deaths of the leaders of one of Australia’s most ambitious exploration expeditions. Enjoy a short scenic flight along the Cooper Creek to the outpost of Innamincka, located on the banks of this iconic inland ‘river’. Innamincka was the site of one of Rev John Flynn’s Inland Missions and quite a wild town back in its early days. This afternoon enjoy a peaceful cruise along the Cooper (subject to water levels) shaded by coolibahs and red gums, visit the restored Inland Mission building and enjoy a cool drink in the uniquely decorated Innamincka Hotel.
Accommodation: Innamincka Hotel
Day 2 Lake Eyre After a low level scenic flight across vast Gibber Plain and sandy deserts, creeks that run dry more often than they see water and the occasional cattle station – before long, you will be overflying the largest salt lake in Australia, Lake Eyre. This afternoon you will be guided by Reg Dodd, an Arabunna aboriginal and passionate local expert. Reg will take you along the Oodnadatta Track right to the shores of Lake Eyre South where flooded or dry, you can either paddle in the shallows or crunch across the vast, horizonless landscape both of which are a wonderful sensation. Reg will share the modern and ancient history and culture of his locality and culture along the way. A picturesque flight this afternoon following the Flinders Ranges South to Parachilna.
Accommodation: The Prairie Hotel
Day 3 Flinders Ranges/Prairie Hotel Air Adventure has a long standing relationship with the Prairie Hotel and they always enjoy welcoming Air Adventure’s guests. They have also carved out a reputation for their unique outback ‘feral’ cuisine and you will have the opportunity to sample it yourself. Your host, Ross Fargher a fourth generation grazier and owner of the Prairie Hotel will give you a great insight into the history and modern day life in this picturesque region between the ranges and the desert.
