Destination Profile - Point Stuart, Northern Territory
Point Stuart Wilderness Lodge is set beside a monsoonal vine forest, and offers visitors the opportunity to explore the Mary River Wetlands. Guests have the opportunity to catch a barramundi for dinner.
Fishing in the Northern Territory is world class and there are many diverse fishing habitats on offer; lush billabongs, big tidal rivers, mangrove-lined estuaries, a scattering of islands and hundreds of kilometres of unspoilt coastline. A fantastic fighting fish, barramundi is famous for high leaps and strong runs.
The Mary River Region is located in the wet/dry tropics of northern Australia, and the Mary River Wetlands are part of a network of northern coastal wetlands which link eight major rivers of the Top End. The Arnhem Highway crosses five of these rivers. This series of wetlands is one of the rarest and ecologically fragile in the world. The Mary River delta encompasses a variety of habitat ranging from permanent wetland to seasonally flooded plains, highland and coastal environments, deciduous monsoonal forest and jungle, sandy beaches and mangroves. The Mary River Wetlands and the delta system support abundant and diverse wildlife, including magpie geese, wallabies, crocodiles, wild boar and buffalo. There are two areas where cruises are available, on the same river system.
The Mary River National Park and Reserves protects a part of the Mary River catchment area and is located about 150 km east of Darwin on the Arnhem Highway. Freshwater billabongs, paperbark and monsoon forests of the river system provide visitors with excellent opportunities for observing wildlife, fishing, bushwalking and photography. Fire management plans are implemented and generally occur early after the wet season to remove the fuel load of the grasslands and forests. This is known as 'mosaic' style burning and aims to maintain diversity'. Controlled roadside burning also takes place to prevent wildfires.
A tour of Desert Park is a highlight of a visit to Alice Springs. The stunning display features the birds and animals of this arid zone, including free flying raptors.
This destination is part of the Flyaway Faraway Kimberley Style Australian Adventure.
