Discover the secret. The city port of Geraldton is situated 400 km north of Perth and is the main administration centre of the state's Mid-West region. Together with the surrounding Greenough district Geraldton has a population of just over 32,000.
Marvel at the St Frances Xavier Cathedral, built from 1916 to 1938 by Monsignor Hawes. This famed architect-come-priest built many churches and other buildings in the Mid West before returning to the Bahamas.
View the HMAS Sydney Memorial which pays tribute to the 645 sailors who were lost at sea during a WWII battles in 1941. Be absorbed by this beautiful monument and at the same time enjoy the panoramic views from Mt Scott over the city beaches
Geraldton's busy port is a major export centre for grain, iron ore, talcum and other minerals. The fishing boat harbour is one of the world's leading processing ports for the rock lobster trade where these succulent crustaceans are processed for live export. The Houtman Abrolhos Islands lie just 60 km to the west; this low-lying group of Islands is the site of many disastrous ship wrecks.
The city possesses a thriving artistic community with local works displayed at the old gaol as well as the Geraldton Art Gallery. The new Western Australian Museum Geraldton, serves as a gateway to the region's history spanning from the creation of the ancient landscape to the Batavia shipwreck and mutiny in 1629 to the development of the thriving region we see today.
Geraldton's pristine beaches boast a variety of activity such as windsurfing, fishing, swimming, snorkeling and long beach strolls watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean. As the light fades the 34-metre tall Geraldton landmark, the Point Moore lighthouse, casts its light 26 kilometres out to sea.
This region is the ideal place to explore incredibly beautiful and varied wildflowers of Western Australia's outback. From around August to October the country springs into colour and wildflowers bloom. Travellers come from far and wide to view Western Australia's stunning wildflowers.
