Destination Profile - Wilpena Pound, South Australia
Wilpena Pound, within the Flinders Ranges National Park, is a natural amphitheatre formed 450 million years ago by massive earth movements. It is accessible through only one narrow gap, carved by the Wilpena Creek.
It is an elevated 'dish' or depression, surrounded by steep, hard cliffs whose walls face outwards. Its interior size is about 14 km by 7 km. The depression is the lowest part of a former, gigantic folded system, the upper parts of which have been removed by erosion. And truly is a sight to behold. An aerial orbit delivers the best vantage point.
Located off the road to Blinman from Wilpena is the Cazneaux Tree, one of the most famous trees in Australia. Photographed by Harold Cazneaux in 1937 and called 'The Spirit of Endurance', it has been reproduced on calendars and posters all over the world.
This destination is part of the Discover the Hart of the Flinders Australian Adventure.
