Destination Profile - Normanton, Queensland

The town of Normanton is situated on the banks of the Norman River in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Matilda Highway passes through Normanton on the way to the township of Karumba, 70 kilometres to the North. Normanton is 700 kilometres by road to Cairns and 500 kilometres by road from Mt Isa. Some 30 km to the south-west of Normanton is Camp 119, Burke and Wills' most northerly camp.

The Gulflander is the historic rail service that goes from "Nowhere to Nowhere". Venturing from Normanton on the remote Gulf of Carpentaria the train travels to Croydon 145 km away each week. This is old gold territory with a history to match the incredible terrain. The railway itself is remarkable as it was laid with no balast. Amazing considering the track has been 10m under water numberous times and is still serviceable. The Gulflander is considered a must do train journey by train buffs world wide.
