Destination Profile - Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania
The narrow entrance to Macquarie Harbour, shifting sandbars and the stormy Southern Ocean made it extremely difficult for shipping. By the early 20th Century, more reliable rail links were established between Strahan and the North Coast. Over the years, Strahan's importance as a service centre diminished and with the mining industry and Huon pine industry contracting, exacerbated by the Depression, Strahan township declined. In 1963 the ABT railway closed and the Harbour complex used by Mt Lyell to export ore was also closed in 1970.
This destination is part of the Tasmania and her Isles Australian Adventure.
