Destination Profile - Haddon Rig, New South Wales

Haddon Rig, in Central Western New South Wales, is one of Australia's well-known properties. First settled by Charles William Wentworth (the first white man to cross the Blue Mountains in 1813), in 1882 the property was sold to James Richmond who established the beginnings of what has become one of the leading medium wool merino studs in the World.

The Falkiner family have owned and directed Haddon Rig since 1916, and with agricultural diversity the property now covers 60,000 acres in the fertile Macquarie Valley with both irrigated and dryland cropping an integral part of the mix. Haddon Rig today breeds and markets 2,000 rams annually; grows and markets cotton and cereal crops, breeds and fattens cattle; and welcomes visitors for day visits or to stay in the Jackaroo Guest Lodge overnight.

Visitors have been welcome at Haddon Rig throughout its history - the homestead has been the heart of client entertainment, with field days and ram sales taking place throughout the year. Contractors and advisers regularly overnight on the property, and it is a point of pride to ensure that everyone is well looked after in true country style.

Haddon Rig is an integral piece of Australia's rural history, with a world-renowned merino stud in operation for nearly 120 years, still breeding 2,000 soft-woolled rams for wool growers throughout Australia. Cutting-edge agriculture is an integral part of the farming program at Haddon Rig in this new century, and the unique environment of productivity alongside nature is part of Haddon Rig's attraction.
