Destination Profile - Gordon River, Tasmania
The Gordon-Franklin Wild Rivers National Park occupies 440,961 ha. in western Tasmania. The Gordon River is a spectacular ribbon through the forests of south-west Tasmania. The Gordon's mystical dark waters are naturally coloured by tannin leaching from the surrounding rainforests.
The downstream portion of the Gordon River reached the TV screens of the world in the early 1980's when it was scheduled to be dammed as part of a hydro electricity scheme, but the federal government intervened to prevent the project.
Cruises on the Gordon River depart from Strahan and pass through Hells Gates where the waters of the harbour and Southern Ocean literally collide to form a treacherous passage of water; en route to Sarah Island where passengers can explore the ruins of the convict settlement of 1822-23.
This destination is part of the Tasmania and her Isles Australian Adventure.
