Destination Profile - Bungle Bungle, Western Australia

200,000 hectares in area including 45,000 hectares of the Bungle Bungle Range, Purnululu National Park (1987) lies 110 kilometres north of Halls Creek and 260 kilometres south of Kununurra in the Kimberley region of eastern Western Australia. The ecology of the parks is very delicately balanced and vegetation includes many contrasts from the unique Fan Palm to the eucalypts and spinifex of the plains. Purnululu is also rich in Aboriginal heritage. The Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater, the second largest on earth, is about 100km south.

Over the last 20 million years erosion and river movements have formed huge black and orange striped domes. As unbelievable as it seems, this area was kept a secret by locals until 1982, and was made a national park in 1987. Every kilometre between the main highway and the rock range is filled with ridge after ridge of jagged rock formations, interspersed with soaks and creeks which are impassable until well into the dry season and then only with a 4WD driven by an experienced four-wheel-driver.

This destination is a part of the Flyaway Faraway Kimberley Style Australian Adventure.
