Destination Profile - Border Village, The Nullarbor Plain, South Australia

Border Village is an oasis situated just on the South Australian side of the SA/WA Border and is the gateway to Western Australia and South Australia, providing fuel, accommodation and meals to truck drivers and travellers alike. Border Village operates on a 45 minute time change from both sides of the border to accommodate the varied body clocks that pass through this busy little hub. One of the best places to view stars unspoiled by the back light of a city or town.

The name 'Nullarbor' derives from Latin for 'no trees' and the name is more than apt. In 1866 E. Alfred Delisser surveyed the Nullarbor Plain and noted a marked absence of trees. Contrary to some popular opinions the word Nullarbor is not of Aboriginal origins. In fact the local people referred to the area as "Oondiri" which is said to mean "the waterless". Delisser derived the term Nullarbor from the Latin "nulla" for no, and "arbor" for tree.

The Head of Bight is located 78 km west of Yalata and 20 km to the east of Nullarbor Roadhouse. As a vantage point to view the Southern Right Whale the Head of Bight is impossible to beat with a number of spectacular clifftop lookouts. Between June and October of each year up to 100 Southern Right Whales frequent this area of the South Australian coastline to breed and give birth to whale calves.

Experience the journey across the Nullarbor in mere hours including aerial whale spotting on board the Western Wedge Safari Australian Adventure.
