Destination Profile - Arkaroola, South Australia

The Arkaroola Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary is a 610 sq km property of spectacular rugged mountains in South Australia's remote outback which offers a range of nature and science based tours and activities.

The main attraction is the half day Ridgetop Tour where visitors are taken in purpose-built 4-wheel drive vehicles through an area of magnificent scenery and enjoy the rich flora and fauna, the geology and the rich history of this ancient part of the world.

Outback South Australia is one of the best places in the southern hemisphere for viewing the stars at night. The Arkaroola Astronomical Observatory houses two substantial telescopes. On nights when the sky is clear tours and viewings are held. The 360 mm computer-operated telescope offers excellent viewing of other galaxies and distant planets.

Arkaroola is the personal vision of the late geologist Dr Reg Sprigg, who purchased the property in 1968 and slowly converted it into a wildlife sanctuary, complete with a lodge. It is probably the most isolated self-supporting village in Australia.

Some of the rocks are estimated to be older than 1,000 million years. The only crystal quartz mountain in the world can be found there. The only access to the mountain is via the Ridge Top Tour.

Rich in history, the area features rugged mountains, towering granite peaks, magnificent gorges and waterholes and is home to more than 160 species of birds and the Yellow- footed rock wallaby.

This destination is part of the Discover the Hart of the Flinders Australian Adventure.
