    SOUTH-EAST Australia's irrigators will have to wait until at least mid-May before knowing how much of Queensland's record flood reaches central NSW. Much of the 403,000 gigalitres of rain that fell on Queensland and the Northern Territory will flow towards central Australia's Lake Eyre.

    Donald Campbell set a land speed record on Lake Eyre in South Australia in 1964, using the concrete-hard salt flats to reach a speed of 648.9 kmh in his jet-propelled BlueBird CN7. Forty-five years later, a totally different "first" was achieved on the site when an investment manager and part-time adventurer, Kieran Kelly, swam the Warburton Groove in the flood-swollen waters.
