Probus Arnhem Land & Tiwi Islands
Day 1: Darwin – Mount Borradaile Camp, Arnhem Land
Depart Darwin early morning for the quick flight over the mouths of the Top-End’s big river systems and into the wilderness – on arrival you are met by a string of 4WDs and taken down to the camp before venturing out on your first expedition. A great place to come face-to-face with monstrous salt water crocs as well as all the quintessential Top-End wildlife (Jabiru, Brolga, Sea-Eagles etc.). Once back at the lodge, the chef cooks your own, impossibly fresh barramundi for dinner.
Accommodation: Mount Borradaile Camp. Note: there are no ensuites here but modern bathrooms are a short, well-lit walk away.
Day 2: Mount Borradaile
Mount Borradaile is a very special part of the world, not just for its bountiful natural beauty but also for its spiritual significance amongst aboriginal people. Throughout the immediate region there are some incredible examples of rock art that transcends through the many recognised time periods, some dating back over 20, 000 years! With the knowledge of Max and his guides you will be well informed as to the meaning behind these depictions. Return to the camp this afternoon before another night spent in the dreamtime.
Accommodation: Mount Borradaile Camp.
Day 3: Mount Borradaile – Bathurst Island, Tiwi Islands
Following breakfast your aircraft is waiting to take you on a flight across the Van Diemen Gulf and over to the Tiwi Islands. You land at Nguiu where you will be met by your local Tiwi guides - excited to show you around their island home. An introduction to their culture and beliefs is given before joining in on a traditional smoking ceremony. Morning tea comes from a billy and then you visit the islanders’ art and craft workshops displaying works that are sought after worldwide.
